Laser Safety Officer Training

Do you have lasers in use within your operations? The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) has developed ANSI Z136, standards that are recognized by OSHA, to address the Safe Use of Lasers. ANSI Z136 states that each employer designate an LSO to ensure the safe operation, maintenance, and service of a Class 3B or 4 laser or laser system. The LSO must maintain the authority and responsibility to knowledgeably evaluate and control laser hazards and to monitor and enforce the control of such hazards. This program is intended for LSOs, supervisors, and safety personnel who have some responsibility with the safe use of lasers, and reviews applicable ANSI Z136.1 standards to protect personnel routinely working with or potentially exposed to Class 3B or 4 laser radiation. Topics include:

·         control measures

·         laser and laser system classifications

·         nonbeam hazards of lasers

·         medical examination practices (if applicable)

·         significance of specular and diffuse reflections

·         bioeffects of laser radiation on the eye and skin

·         overall responsibilities of management and employee

·         fundamentals of laser operation
