Fall Protection: Fundamentals for Construction - Virtual

Whenever any worker in performing construction-activities is exposed to fall-hazards of at least six-feet, OSHA requires that employers ensure workers are protected by conventional fall protection. Although a variety of fall protection systems are available, each situation is unique, and the systems available and permitted may be limited. More importantly, employers must ensure that employees are protected by properly selecting, designing and implementing a proper fall-protection system. This course is intended for competent persons, as well as superintendents, supervisors, foremen, and safety personnel, to understand the various fall protection systems, OSHA’s requirements under 29 CFR 1926 Subpart M, and the responsibilities of qualified persons and designated competent person(s). Topics include:

  • Overview of fall hazards
  • “Qualified” and “competent” persons
  • Integrity of walking/working surfaces
  • Requirements for differing fall-hazard conditions
  • Principles and design of guardrail systems, covers, personal fall-arrest systems, positioning device systems, safety-net systems, warning-line systems, controlled access zones and covers
  • Fall protection in steel-erection
  • Fall protection for scaffolding
  • Fall protection plans
  • Training requirements

This course does not include “hands on” training required for employers.

Note: The Minnesota Safety Council recommends competent persons, trainers and supervisors renew their training every three years to remain apprised of changes and updates.

See “Fall Protection: Fundamentals for General Industry” for specific training addressing fall protection involving non-construction industry and activities.
