Excavation: Fundamentals for the Competent Person - Virtual

Excavations present a dangerous risk to workers who enter them, especially when proper protective systems are not implemented to prevent collapse and cave-ins. OSHA requires that protective systems be properly implemented to protect works entering an excavation, and designate a competent person to regularly inspect excavations and evaluate protective systems. The competent person must be familiar with evaluating conditions, classifying soil, selecting and installing a proper protective system, and ensuring other hazards are properly controlled. This course is designed to provide attendees with the knowledge required to meet the OSHA Competent Person requirements and includes:

This course addresses excavations for ALL industries, and is intended for all workers, including managers, supervisors, superintendents, foremen, operators, and safety personnel. Topics include:

  • Evaluating excavations, including trenches, to recognize hazards
  • Applicable standards, including 29 CFR 1926 Subpart P
  • Roles and responsibilities of competent persons
  • Properly analyzing and classifying soil
  • Cave-in protective systems, including sloping, shielding and shoring
  • Contributing factors (e.g. contributing loads, water, vibration, environmental)
  • Other related hazards and requirements
  • Training requirements

NOTE: The Minnesota Safety Council recommends competent persons, trainers and supervisors renew their training every three years to remain apprised of changes and updates.

Virtual Instructor Led Training Requirements: 
Students are required to have video and audio capability and must remain visible to the instructor and facilitator throughout the class. Additionally, students may not use a phone to participate in the training or view the presentation. Students who are unable to meet these requirements will not be permitted to attend
